I’ve lived in Northern Virginia for … well, let’s just say for a very long time, yet this beautiful door is as close as I have ever been to the George Washington Masonic National Memorial. It’s an interesting building though, and I’ve photographed it quite a lot. Why have I never been inside? I suppose because I have an aversion to exclusive societies and to ritual and especially to secret ritual. But in looking at the Web site, I find that the organization isn’t nearly as secretive as I thought, or maybe it has just become more open over the years. So maybe one of these days I’ll take the tour and, if I’m allowed to take pictures, give you a peek inside.
