Eastern Market

Today’s theme is a typical supermarket in your town. As there are several other bloggers who have shown you modern American supermarkets today, I have spotlighted Eastern Market, a historical Capital Hill neighborhood food market. Constructed in 1873, the market was once on the verge of permanent closure in 1929 due to the rise in popularity of modern supermarkets. Today it is thriving. The north hall houses meat, poultry and seafood stands plus a deli, bakery and hot foods. On the weekend, Eastern Market features outdoor produce and flower sales plus arts & crafts from around the world. Throw in the occasional street musician and you not only can do some food shopping, but you also have a lively, colorful place to pass some time on the weekend.

    Much nicer than another building!

That looks wonderful! Do you often shop there?

Those flowers look lovely! There are so many people there!

Ham, yes, glad it didn’t fall under the wrecking ball, as it was badly in decline at one point.

Sarah, neither Passante nor I live in Washington DC (we both live ten miles away), so I think I can safely say neither one of us shops for food there. I usually go for fun on weekends because it’s so animated, and outside at the other end of the building are all the lovely arts & crafts for sale plus there’s a flea market right across the street. It’s a great way to spend a few hours.

Anne, there are always lovely and unusual fresh flowers, plus the best produce! Often the produce sellers will slice up a few of their fruits and offer a free taste. The fruit is so good that a free taste usually is followed by an immediate sale!

Outdoor markets rule. It is funny how the theme was supermarkets, yet many people found the subject not as appealing a plain old market.–>
