The most famous or infamous mural in Washington is Madam’s Organ. It’s not only the name of a restaurant and blues nightclub but is wordplay on the name of the neighborhood: Adams Morgan. Subject of controversy for its rather lurid nature, the mural also has been involved in a dispute over whether it is advertising or art. It’s certainly both, but the dispute had to do with a permit and involved a fine. The club’s neon sign proclaims: “Sorry, We’re Open,” and its slogan is “where the beautiful people go to get ugly.” I’m a sucker for a self-deprecating sense of humor.
